Taking help or asking an interior designer or Interior Design Company to create a lighting plan for your home that suits the interior design of your home is a great idea! Architects, Interior designers know which lighting style will be perfect for your home!

This Article will list our best home lighting tips that you must abide by when selecting the lighting style for your interiors!

1. Know The Different Types Of Lighting

You’ll be surprised to know the various types of lighting and their purposes:

Accent Lighting

These are spotlights, track lights, lamps, led strips and similar. Accent lighting accentuates an area through its focussed lighting or aesthetic. The type of light focus- linear/circular/ diffused, light intensity- wattage, lighting distance, and lighting colour temperature are technical aspects that must be addressed. The accent light should look good on and off.

The easiest accent lighting is decorative lights and lamps. One can highlight a piece of artwork, illuminate a glass display, accent ceilings, brighten corners, and so much more! Dimmers and mood automation help to augment accent lighting and create ambience.

This adds generously to the cost and aesthetic of any project.

Ambient Lighting

A room needs a general amount of lighting for non-daylight hours. At reNNovate, we provide a minimum of 4 pieces of 15-18 watt LED panel lights in the ceiling for a 10 ft x 10 ft room. This is the equivalent of 2 pieces of tube lights or 4 olden day bulbs of 60 watts. We often get many worried customers transitioning from traditional bulbs and tube lights to ceiling LEDs.

Ceiling LEDS provide shadowless lighting. You can use walls for storage. Life expectancy is the same. You might save a few hundred rupees on local/unbranded/Chinese fittings, but the brand is the best for 2 main reasons: durability and ease of exchange and repair. This becomes important when these are recessed in the ceiling, and the false ceiling sheet has been cut for a specific type of light. We have faced challenges with imported lights where the batch manufacturing stops, and we have to cut the false ceiling again and incur paint costs in addition to lighting costs!

You can use ambient lighting to enhance your home ambience, the most basic type of lighting you need. These come in 6 colour temperatures, of which 3 are the most popular.

  • 6000 K – white like a tube light. These are used in offices and give homes a whitish look at night.
  • 4000k- slightly yellow. These are great for homes. They give a warm feel to the houses. Ambient lighting includes flush mount fixtures, recessed can lights, etc.
  • 2700K- these mimic the olden day bulb- these give the typical yellow light.

Task Lighting

You can use task lighting if you want to light a specific spot for a particular purpose. Best uses under kitchen cabinets, above study tables, reading bedside lights, and vanity lights.

Under cabinet lighting that offers increased visibility on kitchen countertops or a lamp near a desk are examples of ambient lighting.

2. Always Begin With A Focal Point For Accent Lighting

An Essential Tip:

When selecting lighting for your home interiors, the idea is to give the eye something to focus on while the rest of the fixtures work more subtly in the background. Your focal lighting point can serve an ambient purpose or even an accent purpose. Some examples of lighting focal points include; installing a chandelier in your living room, LED strips on the ceiling or furniture, or something more subtle such as a pendant lighting above the kitchen island or even a contemporary lighting fixture above the dining table.

Bifurcate Room By Room

It is important to bifurcate the lighting of every room as every room is utilised for a different purpose and has distinct lighting requirements.

Kitchen:

You can use ambient and task lighting; this offers enough illumination in your kitchens.

Bedroom:

Bedroom lighting must be cosy and comfortable. You can incorporate a lot of dimmers and accent light fixtures to create a soft and relaxing ambience.

Living Room:

Ambient lighting fixtures are perfect for the living room, and you can even install accent lighting in specific corners that you wish to highlight.

Bathroom:

Bathroom lighting can be a mixture of ambient and task lighting. The lighting in your bathroom must be appropriate and functional.

Dining Room:

The ideal room for displaying large and bold fixtures. You can even use accent lighting for additional lighting.

3. Never forget about natural lighting.

Natural lighting is also an essential aspect of your home. You can strategically place mirrors in your room to reflect windows in other parts of the room. This maximises the natural lighting in your room; for incorporating more natural lighting, opt for transparent blinds, shades or curtains that allow the light to flow through without leaving your room much exposed to the outside.

4. Always layer your lights.

Layering is an excellent way to play around with the spatial dimensions of your rooms. Instead of incorporating only one type of lighting per area of every room, you can creatively layer your lights by applying various accent touches and mixing and matching different shapes, styles and bulb wattages. Remember, you can switch off light types and create different illumination and moods.
